Pregnancy Knot: Julie DiFabio

How far along are you in your pregnancy?
I’m 12 weeks along.

How are you feeling physically?
I’m feeling much better now. I was very nauseous for a solid three weeks, unrelenting. I never actually got sick, just constant nausea. It did help a little bit to eat small amounts as often as possible. I am still much more tired than usual, but at least my tummy feels better!

How are you feeling emotionally?
I’m much more emotional than usual. Right after I found out I was pregnant, I discovered I was crying in Kay's Jeweler commercials. This was definitely new for me! Crying comes much easier now than ever before, and often I am unaware of any particular reason for the tears. It’s actually a little scary for me, because it's so different for me that I feel a little out of control.

How have you been preparing for childbirth?
I’ve been doing some reading, but I try not to read so much that I freak myself out. Otherwise, I’ve just been trying to eat healthy, stay as active as I can while I’m so tired, drink lots of water, and take my prenatal vitamins. I'm hoping to be more active as I get a little more energy, so that I can get back to yoga and crossfit (modified for my pregnant body).

What do you love most about pregnancy?
I love that it still catches me by surprise. Like all of a sudden it will hit me again that I’m going to be a mom. The miracle of the whole thing is just really amazing to experience firsthand. Watching my body change and grow and accommodate this little human is fascinating. I’m getting my little baby bump, and i love it!

Any cravings?
I don't have a lot of cravings, but if i do, it's usually for potatoes of some kind. French fries, baked potatoes, etc. - there's something about those carbs!

What makes you feel best right now?
Honestly, resting makes me feel best. I’m used to feeling really energized by exercise, but right now it really wears me out. I work full-time and go to school full-time, so you add first trimester pregnancy to that mix, and a nice couch nap or a few minutes to read for pleasure are just about the best feelings.

What's your vision of childbirth?
I’m still formulating this one. I do plan to have a hospital birth with my ob-gyn that I have been seeing for nearly 10 years. I am hoping to have a natural labor with the assistance of a doula. There are some minor concerns with my having a natural delivery because I am very petite, but i am hoping that my body makes the baby that my body can handle. I’m also seeing my chiropractor regularly throughout pregnancy, which is said to help decrease the chance of C-section and increase success with natural labor. Mainly, I just can't even imagine that moment when I see my little one for the first time and hold him/her in my arms. Wow. Amazing!

Anything else you'd like to share with pregnant moms?
Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself. I thought I wouldn't skip a beat in pregnancy; workouts, school, work, etc... I would be superhuman! Well, I have found that sometimes I just need to skip a workout and lie down, and sometimes a bowl of ice cream just hits the spot. So yes, of course, do your best to take care of yourself and baby. Make healthy choices. But don't be so hard on yourself. Give yourself some room to rest and extend yourself some grace. I’m talking to myself here, too!
