Did it work? Did it reel you in, that catchy title full of promise and efficiency?
I know the feeling. Ten minutes in the grocery checkout line, an hour on the light rail, twenty minutes at lunch. Scroll, scroll, scroll - swipe, pause, like - Facebook, Twitter, RSS feed - eyes bouncing from pic to page, wandering from global news to the perfect lives of our “social network.”
Three tips for this, seven steps to that… Our world of information overload has left us with universal ADD. With little time and even less attention, we find ourselves hunting for the quick fix.
It’s no surprise we carry this same impatience and urgency to get that bun in the oven. For some, it is surprisingly easy and [almost] effortless. A wink, a kiss, and a few months later, your Pinterest-inspired baby announcements are clogging my newsfeed.
But for the rest of us, complex challenges, source unknown, can leave us feeling confused, isolated and hopeless. Then we’re faced with the question - the decision - the tipping point. Will we surrender the need for speed and take up the slow, often laborious “holistic” approach to conception?
For many, fertility treatments are the only way their bodies will conceive. This is, by no means, the “easy way out” your judgy, uninformed friend may think it is. These women risk their hearts and bodies, and dare to hope their hollow bellies may yet hold life. However, in our medically-addicted culture, we can be too quick to jump to an intervention when a lifestyle overhaul coupled with basic anatomy and physiology education may be all we need.
Regardless of if you are taking a “natural” or medical approach to fertility, these are four experts you want on your Fertility Team.
Building Your Dream Team
Two weeks ago we covered a few nutritional tips to get your body ready to conceive and increase your chances of conception. Nutrition is powerful, and a diet packed with fertility-boosting foods can, for some, be all they need to get the baby-making magic happening. Find a real-food-focused nutritionist who can review your current diet and help create a plan to use food to boost your fertility.
A real one. Not just a crunchy friend who picked up some postcard at Vitamin Cottage - find a certified clinical herbalist who has actually gone to school to learn about this stuff. Herbs are timeless medicines, incredibly potent and powerfully effective when handled by a professional. Herbs can save you the maddening side effects of fertility drugs by working with the natural processes of your body to increase fertility function.
If you’re in the Colorado area, we’re hosting an event for those Trying to Conceive (TTC) November 21st. We’re inviting our partner acupuncturist Merry Reasons to speak on the vital role acupuncture can play in balancing your body. Merry works with many of the local fertility clinics, creating unique plans for their clients to prepare their bodies to conceive. Because research continues to support the vital role acupuncture can play in getting people pregnant, many fertility doctors are recruiting acupuncturists to create programs to help their client’s bodies function more effectively. A balanced body is statistically more likely to respond well to fertility treatments. In one study, conception rates for patients undergoing assisted reproductive therapy jumped from 26.3% to 42.5% when they underwent acupuncture as a part of their regime.
4. Fertility Awareness Method Guru
Girl - gotta get yourself an FAM guru. Or, in the very least, pick up the book. This book changed my life. It gave me insight into my body, my cycle, and my fertility - I have never felt as empowered as when I implemented this method of contraception and conception. Can I tell you a secret? Knowing when you are fertile can make it a lot easier to get pregnant. At the same TTC event we’re hosting on Saturday, November 21st, we’re bringing in Rachel Snow, our own personal FAM guru from Boulder, CO to speak on fertility tracking and how this insight into your cycle can boost your chances of conceiving. When a friend, client or acquaintance tells me they’re struggling to get pregnant, this book is my first recommendation.
Then, once you’ve built your dream team, take a deep breath and settle in - you didn’t just sign up for the quick fix. You just made a plan to find health - to pursue a deeper balance and wellness. Even if you’ve never practiced meditation before, now is the time. Download the Elevate app and get to meditating. Finding a healthier inner state also plays an important role in telling your body that now is the time to bring a baby into this world.
