Tessa gave birth on one of the coldest nights of 2014. The temperatures plunged just as her contractions began to intensify. Derek called me, and I carefully drove down the icy roads of Colorado Springs. When I arrived, it was evident that Tessa's birthing time had come. Her movements and her vocalizations were strong, and they made us all think she was so very close to delivering her baby! So when her midwife checked her, we were a bit shocked to find out she was only at a 5. But despite hearing that number, Tessa didn't lose heart. (And I prepared myself for a long night ahead). She labored for another hour and surprisingly began to feel the urge to push. When the midwife checked her again, she was complete, a 10! One of the most important lessons I've learned about birth: labor is always surprising...especially when you think you have it figured out. Tessa gave birth to her beautiful daughter - Journey Mae - just an hour or so later.
